AFF Suzuki Cup 2010: Malaysia takes three-goal lead in the first leg final

AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 - A sea of yellow and red fans witnessed an explosive first-leg AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 final that saw Malaysia storm to a sensational 3-0 win on Boxing Day over arch-rivals Indonesia at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil December 26 evening.

Although it was a great result, Malaysian coach K. Rajagobal said there’s still the second leg to go and the game was far from over.

“The game was quite even in the first half although I thought that we were a little too eager where the execution in the final third was sloppy,” said Malaysian chief coach K. Rajagobal.

“Okto (Vianus) was a handful but the other two strikers (Christian) Gonzalez and Yonki (Ari Bowo) were not too dangerous even though they came close on some occasions.

“I thought that we deserved to win because we were more aggressive in the second half but the job is not over yet. There’s still another 90 minutes to play for.”

The Malaysians, playing in front of a capacity crowd which included No. 1 fans – FAM president Sultan Ahmad Shah and his deputy Tengku Abdullah – and some 15,000 Indonesian supporters, rose to the occasion and delivered a stunning performance to take a comfortable cushion to Jakarta for the return leg on Wednesday night.

Mohd Safee Sali was the hero of the team with two goals while Mohamad Ashari Samsuddin netted the other.

“The first goal spoiled it for us, I don’t know what happened to the defence after that,” quipped Indonesia chief coach Alfred Riedl.

“It was a normal match in the first half and even at the start of the second half. But after the first goal, I don’t know what happened to the defence. The individual mistakes cost us the game and after that first goal, the other two goals just came in.

“Today we were just too far away from the Malaysian goal.”

It was a tremendous atmosphere the game kicked off to and the players responded by going all out to get the goals. The Malaysians charged forward with S. Kunalan and Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal providing support from the flanks.

It was not long before they got their first look but Kunalan’s shot was saved by Markus Harison. Amirulhadi then let loose a shot but was also off the mark, and that was the only other clear shot the Malaysians had in the first half.

Indonesia also made some serious moves but like Malaysia failed to get their shots in. Skipper Firman Utina was his usual self and masterminded the team’s attacks but his passes through to the forwards were not converted.

Oktovianus Maniani, one of the most impressive players of the tournament so far, will see no further action after tonight as he picked up a booking in the 5th minute.

Malaysian defender Mohd Asraruddin Putra was carded in the 33rd minute but the blow for the host was when Amirulhadi was booked in injury time.

This was his second booking in the semifinal-final round and like Oktavianus will have to watch from the stands in Jakarta.

The second half came alive on the hour mark as striker Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, who got married the previous day, burst through the defence to cross to Safee who swept the ball in.

Eight minutes later, Norshahrul was in the thick of action again when he set-up Mohamad Ashari who doubled the score for the home side.

Despite some efforts from Indonesia to sneak in a goal, the Malaysians, their confidence boosted by the two goals, pressed on and picked up a third in the 72nd minute when Safee headed in a cross from Safiq Rahim.

Indonesia, led by strikers Christian Gonzalez and Yongky Ari Bowo, threw in everything they had and had several looks at goal but failed to convert any of them.

In the last ten minutes, Indonesia missed out on turning in at least one of the two free kicks they had. One goal from Indonesia here where the away goals rules apply, would make a world of difference when they host Malaysia in Jakarta in three days.

Booming Vietnam telecom industry expected to cool in 2011

Deputy Minister of Information and Telecommunication, Tran Duc Lai, cautioned that the telecom market will cool down in 2011 as the number of subscribers has been saturated.

The warning comes despite U.S. research firm, Pyramid Research, projecting that Vietnam’s telecom industry revenues will reach 5.9 billion dollars this year, doubling the figure of 2007.

The minister elaborated that Vietnamese authorities have tightened control over mobile networks via issuing regulations on promotion mobile numbers, prepaid and inactive subscribers.

Vietnam now has a total of 162.88 million phone subscribers, 91.2% of whom are mobile phone users.

Pyramid said most of the revenues are attributed to the mobile phone field that is expected to continue being a major cash earner of Vietnam’s telecom service industry with the boom in 3G services.

The telecom market will cool down in 2011 as the number of subscribers has been saturated.

According to the Ministry of Information and Telecommunication, Vietnam Posts & Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT), a leading telecom firm in Vietnam, is estimated to post revenues of VND101.57 trillion (USD5.07 billion) and pay taxes of VND7.86 trillion (USD392.75 million) this year.

The revenues is 22% higher than a year earlier and will surpass its earlier full-year target of VND100 billion (USD5 million).

Military Telecom Corporation (Viettel) will rank the second with revenues estimated at VND91.134 trillion (USD4.55 billion) in 2010, a soar of 50% from the figure of 2009.

Meanwhile, Saigon Post and Telecommunications Services Corporation or Saigon Postel (SPT) will have revenues of VND1.165 trillion (USD58.25 million) this year.

The figures indicate that IT and telecom firms have made breakthrough growth which nearly tripled against the national GDP of 6.5% expected for 2010.

The ministry also requested telecom firms not to race for subscribers but to improve their service quality.

Economists forecast that with stricter regulations plus the saturation, unprepared companies and unrealistic expectations may fail in the competition next year.

An interview with Chinese actor Liu Xiao Ling Tong in Vietnam

Chinese actor Liu Xiao Ling Tong, famous for starring as Sun Wukong or Monkey King in a popular 1980s Chinese TV series, raises numerous monkeys to the point his daughter thought one monkey was her father.

The 51-year-old internationally-acclaimed star in the epic ‘Journey to the West’ gave an exclusive interview Saturday with Tuoi Tre during his five-day tour in Vietnam starting December 25.

Can you communicate with monkeys in real life?

The number of monkeys I keep in my house are even more numerous than my family’s offspring.

But it’s not always an advantage if you keep close contact with the monkey. My daughter grows up thinking that she is a daughter of the monkey.

Even my wife sometimes becomes shocked at seeing our house like a hideout for monkeys. Also she is sometimes panicked seeing me in anger with my eyes opening wide [in imitation of the Monkey King].

I know a photographer who won an international award with a photo he took of me and a monkey. At the time, I was costumed as Sun Wukong and the real monkey looked like it was trying to shake my hand.

It’s in the animal’s instinct to raise its hand upon seeing me. The picture undergoes no modifications like Photoshop or whatsoever.

The monkey shares similar feelings with humans being, has happiness, anger, love and hatred. It may become sulky if you tease it with fruits but then take them back.

If you treat a monkey well, it will return the favor to you.

You announced that you will not teach anyone how to act the Monkey King the way you did?

TNK 2

A minor crisis has taken place with the role of Sun Wukong in China. Those who act differently from me will not be accepted by the audience. But doing it similarly to me is called mimicking.

Many learners who train themselves to become actor of the Monkey King admitted that the more they tried to mimic, the more impossible the task would be.

So I don’t want to teach anyone because I want to let them study themselves from what I did and develop it into their own, not to mimic it.

Besides, I now find it interesting with the other job: writing and taking care of the Hall of Fame of Wu Cheng’en [who is credited with authoring the novel] and an exhibition hall for me [in the eastern province of Jiangsu].

What do you think about new variations of Sun Wukong, the main character of the novel?

In some films adapted from the novel, they let Sun Wukong having sex with monsters, or marrying an adopted daughter of the Bodhisattva of Mercy.

I always give the advice when I come to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and others that ‘you should develop it not to distort it’.

One of the main characteristics of Sun Wukong is honesty.

I know children in Vietnam enjoy watching Sun Wukong on television every summer and I want to tell them that Sun Wukong always keeps his eyes over children’s development.

Vietnamese businesses import 10 tonnes of gold ahead of schedule

Vietnamese businesses and banks have finished importing about 10 tonnes of gold ahead the December 30 schedule given by the State Bank of Vietnam.

Of the sum, Saigon Jewelry Holding Co. (SJC) imported 1 tonne of gold. SJC Deputy General Director Truong Cong Nhon said the gold amount is still in the company’s stock and can ease high demand for investors and people.

A representative from Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Sacombank) said the import has helped to improve its gold supply.

Nguyen Thi Cuc, Deputy General Director of Phu Nhuan Jewelry Company (PNJ), said PNJ completed the import a week ago. She added that, “With the relatively high disparity between domestic and world gold prices and the exemption of gold import taxes from November 12, enterprises can benefit from the gold import.”

Cuc, however, noted that it is difficult to bring domestic gold prices closer to the world level despite the improved supply and lower demand at the end of the year. The disparity of between VND400,000 (USD20) to VND500,000 (USD25) per tael would be still maintained when USD prices in the free market in Vietnam have remained high, she said.

According to Mrs. Cuc, the world gold market would be more stable in early 2011 due to forecasts about U.S. economic improvements and gold prices might not come back to the record high of USD1,430 per ounce in December 2010. Nevertheless, Vietnam’s gold prices could not totally follow the global trend if the USD supply is not improved.

On the morning of December 22, a tael of SJC-branded gold were being bought at VND35.81 million (USD1,790) and sold at VND35.91 million (USD1,795). The buying price of Bao Tin Minh Chau-branded gold bar was at VND35.82 million per tael and selling price was at VND35.92 million per tael, up VND2,000 (USD0.1) against the afternoon of December 21.

After a sharp increase in gold prices hitting VND38.2 million (USD1,910) per tael on November 9, the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) allowed several banks and firms, including Asia Commercial Bank (ACB), Vietnam Export Import Commercial Joint-Stock Bank (Eximbank), Sacombank, VietABank, SJC and PNJ, to import gold.

Earlier, on October 7, the SBV also issued gold import quota licenses for a total of 3 tonnes during the license validity period until October 12.
